Holos Kombucha, a UK-based organic brand, has a dual purpose: to brew the highest quality organic kombucha while providing employment opportunities to survivors of human trafficking.
Naomi Partridge and Megan Landreth-Smith were inspired to start the brand after meeting a victim of exploitation on the streets of Cambodia. They decided to create a business where survivors of exploitation and trauma could rebuild their lives through meaningful employment.
Kombucha is a naturally fermented tea made with just a few ingredients: tea, sugar, and a living culture known as a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast). Over time, the fermentation process transforms this mixture into a tangy, effervescent drink packed with organic acids, probiotics, and enzymes. However, not all kombuchas are made the traditional way—many commercial brands use shortcuts, adding artificial carbonation and pasteurizing the drink, which strips it of its natural goodness. Holos Organic Kombucha stays true to authentic brewing methods, which ensures that the end product contains the full spectrum of benefits that support gut health and aids digestion, while providing polyphenols and antioxidants and a natural energy boost from B vitamins and organic acids, which can help enhance energy levels and metabolism without the crash of sugary sodas.
Holos Kombucha only use 100% organic ingredients. Every batch starts with carefully sourced organic teas, ensuring purity and sustainability. The tea is naturally fermented with no artificial carbonation and no shortcuts—just a slow, natural fermentation process that results in a rich, complex taste. It is unpasteurized, full of live cultures and Holos’ dedication to quality has earned them recognition from the Great Taste Awards, a highly respected food accreditation in the UK. Their Citra Hops Kombucha stands out with a coveted 3-star rating, praised for its crisp, citrusy complexity—making it one of the best kombuchas on the market.
The name Holos comes from the Greek word for “whole,” reflecting their commitment to wholeness in both people and the planet. There are over 50 million individuals who are being exploited in the world today with an estimated 122,000 of those in the UK (figures from Walk Free Foundation 2022). Holos was crafted with the aim of providing a path for some of these exploited people, offering sensitive, supportive work placements and charitable giving designed to help survivors of exploitation and trauma rebuild their lives.
Their work aims to help these individuals through three routes:
- Providing supportive employment placements – in 2024 they had 6 placements and 502 hours of paid work.
- Equipping charitable partners and campaigns – in 2024 they onboarded 4 charitable partners and donated 245 to campaign events.
- Meeting individual needs through the Holos Foundation, a charitable arm which part owns Holos, designed to provide additional support for individuals rebuilding their lives from the horrors of exploitation and trauma. Holos Kombucha’s upcoming NPD will include a financial contribution ‘per can’ direct to the Holos Foundation, which will create a source of unrestricted income for additional support needed by placement participants (e.g. trauma counselling).
