This month we witnessed the passing of one of our sector’s most authentic and committed proponent of the organic industry. Peter was always an approachable, likeable and convincing champion of the values that he held for the environment and consequently his role within the organic sector.
Peter was engaged, genuinely interested and extremely well informed on matters relating to food production and environmental conservation in a commercial world. His practical experience as a farmer, politician and environmental campaigner and his broad outlook and inquisitive character made him a formidable advocate for the organic sector.
His strength came from his power of observation and understanding of the complicated and integrated needs of the agricultural business, society and the environment. He challenged and held to account poorly constructed arguments made in the name of progress that overlooked the needs of broader society and the environment.
He was liked by many, frustrated by those who withered under his persuasive logic and above all, deeply respected by those who had occasion to work with him.
We will miss him, and his contribution to the foundations of our industry ensures a position of strength from which we can hope for a better future.
